Utah Joins the War on Contraception

Just weeks after California Representative Darrell Issa felt the need to call a special hearing to bemoan the oppression of the Catholic Church’s First Amendment rights–the freedom of religion–Utah Republicans are ready to legislate away another First Amendment right, their teachers’ right to free speech. The Utah House passed a bill, HB363, that would allow schools to ban sex ed and prohibits instruction in the use of contraception by a 45-28 vote. The bill now moves on to the state Senate.

But not to worry, the bill’s sponsor,  Rep. Bill Wright, R-Holden, “a dairyman“(!), has got the doublespeak down. Perhaps realizing that banning the discussion of contraception (under the guise of forbidding ”advocacy” of its use) might leave educators tongue-tied–and on the brink of a crime spree–if asked a direct question about contraception, he maintained that teachers could respond to students’ questions on the matter. How, exactly, he couldn’t say. The language of the bill states: “An instructor may respond to a spontaneous question as long as the response is consistent with the [bill's] provisions.”

Wright can be added to the ever-growing list of public officials who have gone on the record with their light-years-beyond-the-mainstream belief that birth control is a dodge, an “intellectually dishonest” way of “getting away with” sex. Boldly ignoring the biological truth that even married women aren’t able to get pregnant every day of their married life, he, along with Senator Santorum and the Catholic Church, have decided that sex is for procreation only and that the consequences of unprotected premarital sex aren’t grave enough already. (Apparently the threat of eternal damnation isn’t what it used to be.) Though Wright, like Santorum and the Church, professes to be protecting all of us from the consequences our mainstream “brainwashing” has left us unable to recognize without their intervention, everybody knows the wages of sexual sins are not distributed equally. To be sure, the Mormon influence in Utah may make it harder for an unmarried dad to shirk his parental responsibilities. Still, we all know who gets pregnant and who had to wear that scarlet letter.

There’s reason for hope though, even in this ultra-conservative state. Anyone who has visited Utah over the past thirty years can tell you how much influence the Mormon Church has lost over the state liquor laws. Where there once was no MTV, “16 and Pregnant” airs unmolested. And a Democratic lawmaker from Salt Lake City like Rep. Brian King can fight the self-appointed contraception police and go on the record saying that bills like HB363 make ”reasonable people think we have lost it up here on the Hill.”

Planned Parenthood is Protecting Choice Right in the Heart of Utah

Feminist Conversations is a weekly column where we interview pro-choice advocates from around the country to find out what feminism means to them, and what pro-choice activism looks like in their neck of the woods. This week we’re talking to Karrie Galloway, the CEO of Planned Parenthood of Utah.

When most people think of Utah, the first image that they conjure up usually isn’t a Planned Parenthood clinic. And yet, Planned Parenthood has a very strong presence in the state of Utah. They operate nine clinics, from Logan in the northern part of the state, to St. George in the southwest corner. Planned Parenthood of Utah recently opened a clinic in Orem, which is home to Utah Valley University and the next door neighbor of Provo, home to Brigham Young University. The Planned Parenthood clinic in Orem is the fastest growing in the state, experiencing an 18% increase in its patient load since the clinic opened in 2009.

Karrie Galloway attributes that growth to several factors. “The Utah Valley is a very quickly growing community, with a large population of young people who are between the ages of 18-26. Utah has a fairly young demographic in general, and it also has a high fertility rate. People are coming to Planned Parenthood to access our family planning services to help them space their children.” [Read more...]

Susa Young Gates: This is What a Suffragist Looks Like

August 18th marked the 90th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which formally granted women the right to vote in the United States. When we think about the women’s suffrage movement, we usually conjure images of women wearing purple sashes and carrying banners that say “Votes For Women.”

Women of the western states are often overlooked in the discussion about suffrage. This is especially true of women in Utah. Mainstream culture likes to depict Mormon women as subservient to a patriarchal religion, particularly if we think about women in the 1800’s. However, a brief glimpse of Mormon suffragists gives us a very different view of women during the 19th Century.

Utah women initially obtained the vote in 1870, by a bipartisan vote of the state legislature. However, Congress repealed Utah women’s suffrage in 1886 as part of a series of anti-Mormon bills that were passed through Congress. There was quite a debate in Congress about whether Utah women should retain the right to vote. Many Easterners felt that if Mormon women could vote, they would vote to end polygamy. That view was soon shattered when members of Congress realized that Utah women favored polygamy. The vote was restored when Utah became a state in 1896, and there was overwhelming public support for universal suffrage. [Read more...]

Anti-Immigrant Racism Spreads to Utah

The whole world is familiar with the wave of anti-immigrant sentiment that has taken Arizona by storm. Last week, many residents of Cochise County were alarmed to receive hand-addressed letters in their mailboxes that purported to be from the Cochise County Sheriff’s office. The letters stated that SB1070, Arizona’s recent anti-immigration law, would be going into effect on July 29th, that the residents had been duly warned, and that they should leave the state or face the consequences. The Cochise County Sheriff’s Department has denied that the letters came from its office, and the State of Arizona is looking in to possible criminal charges for the person or group who sent the letters.

Unfortunately, this type of racist hysteria is not limited to Arizona. NPR reported on Wednesday that an anonymous group of individuals, who have opted to call themselves Concerned Citizens of the United States, has compiled a list of over 1300 people who allegedly are living in the state of Utah illegally. The list includes the people’s names, addresses, social security numbers, birthdays, and due dates in the case of pregnant women. Concerned Citizens of the United States sent the list to Utah’s media outlets and government agencies, demanding that the alleged illegal residents be deported. When is the insanity going to stop? Womb is Utah’s

As I start to write this article I have the uncontrollable urge to ask Utah: are you kidding me?

I was alerted yesterday by Amplify that Utah’s congress overwhelmingly passed legislation that will criminalize women for miscarriages if it is determined the pregnancy ended as a result of “intentional, knowing, or reckless behavior.”

The bill is riddled with clauses that leave the state wide open to re-colonize the body of Utah women. One cannot help but think of The Handmaid’s Tale when reading about these new laws. [Read more...]

Utah Republican Lawmaker Pushing for Invasive Ultrasound Bill in 2010

Rep. Carl Wimmer, Republican lawmaker in Utah, certainly doesn’t want to make the already difficult decision to have an abortion any easier for women. In fact, he is in the midst of pushing through a bill for the 2010 legislative session seeking to amend the state’s informed consent law. In the status quo, Utah abortion law requires that women be told they have the right to view an ultrasound (as if they didn’t already know that).

Unfortunately for women in the state of Utah, Wimmer is pushing for more invasive restrictions that would dramatically challenge a women’s right to choice. Rep. Carl Wimmer’s bill would require that a doctor provide an image of the fetus on an ultrasound along with a detailed description of what is on the screen. [Read more...]

Group to Memorialize Queer Mormons Who Have Committed Suicide

Salt Lake TempleThis weekend, Mormons will gather in Salt Lake City for their biannnual General Conference, where church leaders will address members in two full days of speechifying. One group, The Foundation for Reconciliation, is planning to hold a memorial service this weekend to remember all of the LGBTQ people who have committed suicide in Utah. They will honor those who have passed away, as well as share stories of gay Mormons who have been able to reconcile their faith and their sexual orientation. They are also collecting petition signatures on their website that the will deliver to LDS Church headquarters, demanding that the church embrace its queer parishioners.

Utah has the tenth highest suicide rate in the country. The suicide rate for young men ages 15-21 is four times the national average. Since LGBTQ teens are three times as likely to commit suicide as heterosexual teens, I am willing to put dollars to donuts that those young men killing themselves in Utah are queer. Having grown up in the Mormon culture, I know what it’s like to try to reconcile my faith and my sexuality. It’s not an easy task – I tried committing suicide twice as a teenager.

This weekend’s memorial comes at an important time. Last year, of course, the Mormon Church was very involved in the fight to ban same-sex marriage in both California and Arizona. Earlier this year, a gay couple was arrested for kissing at Temple Square. And last month, an LDS leader named Elder Bruce Hafen delivered a speech at the Evergreen International conference, where he denied a biological cause for homosexuality. (Evergreen International is an organization that advocates repairative therapy for gays and lesbians.) [Read more...]
