Simone de Beauvoir a name to remember

simone de beauvoir calebrated by feminists for choiceBorn in 1908, this lady who was nothing less than essential to pave the way for feminists in her time is someone’s writings which we do well to remember. Here we would like to pay tribute to a women of the toughest, who at the same time had a gentle and caring heart. There is no doubt about the big role she played in the history of all women, and of course the team here at Feminists for Choice pay our greatest respects and celebration to such a hero.

Women such as Simone de Beauvoir was and still is greatly needed in the world, then and today alike. Known for her work The Second Sex, in which she gives a detail breakdown analysis of women’s oppression as well as for her novels, the new framework of thought she introduced and spread to many women during the time, and even today, we cannot help but commend her great efforts. She was also involved as political activists and social theorist.

We would like to warmly recommend her books and works for anyone who is a reader, and ensure that the points which are brought up and in a strong way put in front of our noses cannot help but make the neurons fire, ever so slightly different than before. With texts full of realisations and a womanly understanding without a like, only good can come from spreading the world about this wonderful known feminist. And if you don’t know her yet, your next visit to the library should perhaps include a browse under her section of the shelf.

Punk Rockers
riot grrls feminismIn the early 90’s there was a wave of feminism which spawned from a fusion of arts, music and consciousness in society. We want to mention this period and this type of feminism as it incorporates something very important in the aspect of feminism, as to women being equal, not to be as men, but to be as women. It may sound like a statement of the obvious, but it’s important to understand that men and women are different simply due to the fact of culture, and the history of this struggle for equality between the genders.

Starting in Washington, the fusion of art, music and in the midst of fighting for equality, a movement known as the Riot Grrrls was born as a response to the male dominated music scene. Punk girls formed bands, which also gave rise to the printing of magazines and publications. It was a mixture of punk values and feminism in one, and this punk revolution with a twist gained many followers at the time. Their main subject of discussion were often things such as racism, rape and body image, and in trying to reclaim ownership of one’s body rejected stereo type looks.

Some info on the feminist sex wars
sex wars feminismThere was a famous era at the end of the 1970s, when pornography had become accessible to the general public. This was the rise of the anti-porn feminism. Where a large group of women were against pornography as the overtly sexual portrait painted of women in this image, infringed and violated their civil rights.

Some went as far as to associate a promotion of sexual violence towards women. One famous name from this era is Robin Morgan, who in her very own blunt words stated that “pornography is the theory, rape is the practice”. In her theory, as to many of the anti-pornography feminists, heterosexual intercourse was seen as a form of male dominance. And the scene and approach needed to change in a way so that it’s not harmful to women.

Of course on the opposite side of this radical view were the feminists who beloved that women’s liberation were inclusive of complete sexual freedom. This in turn led rise to the pro-sex feminists on the early 80s. Thanks to Bristol Locksmiths for their contribution.

Free global market & capitalism
free-market-capitalismThis subject is one that is, and has been heavily discussed, encouraged and protested against the last couple of decades. As the economy is becoming more and more global, capitalism is becoming more and more of an issue. From an economical perspective, a business perspective, there is less opportunity for those with less resources, or for those living in debt. This also applies in the bigger scale to the global market. And countries who have later than others joined the global economy are struggling to keep out of debt and to make investments.

In many cases, a relation to how we are moving towards privatization of services and products in each country, in combination with opening the gates to a global market for anyone, is seen with the welfare of a country. Of course this is only one perspective, however, when the object become profit, and not care for the other, or the others we are faced with many moral and economical issues, with regards to the welfare of people.

Education around the globe
education for everyoneWe would like to spend a couple of lines just bringing to light some important factors. In the year 2012 there were thirty one million primary school pupils worldwide who dropped out of school, and on that note there were thirty two million pupils who repeated a grade. In conjunction, in south and west Asia together with the sub-Sahara the number of students who did not complete their primary education reaches almost twenty five million.

In these amazingly overwhelming statistics a thought must spur and the question is of course why, if you look at geographical locations of this, children living in rural areas are twice as likely not to complete their education. In terms of wealth and welfare, the richest fifth of the population are four times more likely to complete education compared with the poorest fifth. Thanks to Locksmith Leicester. Making a great statement, that we are not living in a world with equal opportunities. The question moving forward must be, what and how can we move forward in a better way?

Information, education and the Internet
signWhen it comes to the current situation in many western countries, more and more schools are becoming private. Even Universities and Colleges are charging higher and higher tuition fees for education that becomes worth less and less on the current employment market. This is in a time when seemingly the costs in learning are in many aspects and in most areas become cheaper to provide. This development in the increase of the price in education by institutionalisation seems to coincide with the global market and the economical freedom takes hold on the globe. This is not a state of a cause and effect, rather just a note drawing between a countries economical survival on a global market where those holding the most investment money are in control of.
However, the rise of the technologies we have today, and the information based internet should be used more for the people in their everyday lives, and in their education. Currently anyone could learn most skills one would want simply by online videos, tutorials, and the countless words posted on the internet each day. The question then becomes why is this venture not used to share more useful and life applicable information, by those who have the resources to invest. Or even by those who govern the states. It seems simple to say, and maybe more difficult in practice, but why not make online universities better known, and why not cut the cost of these to a free service? It’s not a costly venture in the whole scale of things, but it could be beneficial to countless people. In practicality I’m met with many who put themselves in major debt in order to be able to attend university, however are in actuality struggling to make their living due to the current climate.

Risk
If education could be made available and accessible to all online, without financial risk then surely it would be taken up by those who want to go down the route of academia rather than trades like plumbing or Locksmiths. There are many great minds in our societies today who are not being used to their full potential, as they are being occupied by making a living in their own situation. But in a situation where they were given the chance to get a degree in their own time around their current work, in line with their own interest and their own potential they have the option to do something. In this they can also make sure that the courses which include skills at a deficit in the country in the current employment market are in high visibility. There is much to be gained in the perspective of making, keeping and sustaining a highly educated population. With the technology available today it’s something which is possible, left is only the realisation of the idea, and seeing how doable it is right now. You can learn any skill online now, why not give those who learn online the accreditations showing their knowledge raising their employability? Many attend university to further their skills and knowledge but the questions that students often ask may not be the right questions and universities are aware of this fact.
