trivial_pursuit_pie_smallHere’s some more pro-choice trivia for your fabulously feminist Friday!

  • There are 3 million unintended pregnancies each year, which constitutes 50% of all pregnancies.  Approximately half of unintended pregnancies result in abortions each year.
  • 68,000 women die worldwide each year do to unsafe abortions.
  • The United States has the highest rate of STI’s (sexually transmitted infections) in the industrialized world.
  • My home state of Arizona has the second highest teen birth rate in the US.

All of these statistics speak to the importance of comprehensive, medically accurate safe sex education.  The fact is that sex ed saves lives.  If the anti-choice movement were truly “pro-life,” they would support sex education, because it prevents unintended pregnancies by educating people about birth control and profalatic options.  It also prevents STI’s, because people learn how to use “condom sense,” to use a term from Planned Parenthood.

These statistics were all compiled by Planned Parenthood Arizona, but they are drawn from a variety of sources.

my co-workers and I were just discussing this yesterday, how it is extremely important to be educated about sex. In my district it was manditory to take drug and sex education, however you did need parental consent to take the classes, if it wasn’t signed you got a free period (which never seemed fair to me)seeing the slides of STDs and the Swedish birthing videos scared me a little and I didnt want to go anywhere near a boy for a very long time, and when i finally did, i felt i had the knowledge i needed to be safe and make good choices. I don’t understand the concept that if you teach children about sex that they are going to want to have it. It’s not knowing anything that makes people want to experiment or make rash decisions.
