Sex in the City

Sex is all over the news up here in New York City, and not just because the newly-wedded Kardashian is divorcing. Between the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ recent recommendation that 11- and 12-year-old boys be vaccinated against the Human Papalloma Virus (HPV) and the reaction to the city’s mandatory sex ed program set to begin this spring, even a reasonably polite, mild-mannered adult like myself can be forgiven for thinking about the sex lives of strangers. Even if they’re underage strangers. Hopefully.

Not for the first time, I’m wondering how people manage to do the whole parenting thing. As a licensed therapist once told me, cultures have taboos for a reason. And let’s face it, how many taboos do we have left besides those having to do with S-E-X? I have serious doubts as to how many adults can really have an adult conversation about sex with other adults. So, to put it mildly, I do not envy anyone having to have “the talk” with their kids. But part of parenting—and part of being an adult in a mostly-functioning society—is to put the well-being of the most vulnerable above our own feelings, icky as they may be. [Read more...]

HPV, Throat Cancer and Boys

I recently wrote about the importance of the HPV vaccine, given its ability to help prevent cervical cancer. But, as it happens, the vaccine isn’t just for cervical cancer and genital warts. Now it seems that the vaccine could also prevent certain types of throat cancers.

That’s right, throat cancer. New research from The Journal of Clinical Oncology shows that throat cancer caused by HPV – usually contracted by oral sex – is on the rise.

Setting the record straight on HPV

By now, Michele Bachmann’s remarks about the HPV vaccination may be old news. But they still infuriate me, so I’m going to set the record straight on HPV and the corresponding vaccine.

Let me rewind to last week’s Republican debate. The hilariously off-center (and I refer to her sanity here, not political leanings) Michele Bachmann attacked Rick Perry for his 2007 executive order mandating young girls in Texas to be vaccinated against HPV, a common STI and leading cause of cervical cancer in women.

I realize that vaccinating children is controversial. But, for me, this specific one is a no brainer: vaccinate against cervical cancer.

Are Cervical Cancer Screenings Ever ‘Needless’?

I happen to be very proactive about my health: from skin checks, to at-home breast exams, to all-things vagina. Some may scoff at me for being “paranoid” — after all, I’m not even 30 — but I prefer to err on the side of caution. I’d hate to be sidelined from getting my feminist activism on by some disease, especially if it’s a preventable one.

So imagine my surprise when I read the headline, “Many women get needless HPV tests for cervical cancer.” Huh? How can one get too many tests for cancer? Especially in light of the onslaught against women’s healthcare across the country, I’d say more than ever, we aren’t getting enough cancer screenings.

According to the article, a government study (already I’m suspicious) “shows that a surprising number of doctors are failing to follow guidelines on how to perform HPV checks, suggesting that many women are getting unnecessary tests. That wastes money and could lead women to get medical care they don’t need.” Hmmm, I’m not really digging the underlying message here that spending money on women’s medical care may be, at any point, frivolous. Monday News Roundup

mouse_click_270x270First of all, my apologies for the brevity of content today. I woke up yesterday to a dead laptop. My cat managed to spill a glass of water on top of the computer. And I think the rest of the story is self explanatory. Hopefully the nice geeks at the Genius Bar will give me a new laptop and get me back in business within a day. I think a low-cut shirt should help my cause. Thank goodness for extended warranties and external hard drives.
