Dr. Henry Morgantaler is a Hero of Canada

Today’s post comes to us from Pedgehog, who usually blogs over at Anti-Choice is Anti-Awesome. Pedgehog works at a Morgantaler Clinic in Toronto, Canada.

In 2005, Dr. Henry Morgentaler was given an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Western Ontario. If you are not Canadian, chances are you don’t know what any or all of that means. Neither did I, at the time.

I remember when it was in the news that Dr. Morgentaler would be receiving the degree, because we were discussing it at the dinner table. A friend of mine was attending UWO (or ‘Western’ as it is more commonly known) at the time and her mother objected to the famous abortion provider being honoured there. All I knew about Dr. Morgentaler was that he had something to do with the legal status of abortion in Canada. I had no interest in the pro-choice movement at that point, having only just begun to discover my feminist self.

My father was firm in his support of the honorary degree, and in an uncharacteristically passionate outburst, he declared: “Henry Morgentaler deserves that degree, and an Order of Canada on top of it! That man has done more than anyone else for women’s rights in this country.” [Read more...]

40 Days of Life Protests Start Tomorrow

pro-choice escortsThe wing nuts are gearing up for 40 days of ass-hattery and, oh yeah . . . prayer. Anti-choicers will be gathering outside of family planning clinics to provide “sidewalk counseling” (in the form of telling lies about abortion through a megaphone) and generally be making life harder than it already is for clinic staff, volunteers, and the patients seeking family planning services.

Stand up for choice! To find out if your local family planning clinic is in need of volunteers, check out the Facebook groups Stand Up For Choice and 40 Days For Choice. Here is a short list of clinics that we know of who have asked for help.

Makeshift Bomb Thrown at Nebraska Planned Parenthood Clinic

100_0833Last week someone threw a Molotov cocktail into the parking lot of a Nebraska Planned Parenthood clinic. According to Action 3 News Omaha:

Lincoln police say someone attempted to throw a Molotov cocktail at the local Planned Parenthood clinic, but missed.

Instead, police say, the makeshift explosive fell just short of the building and burned pavement in the parking lot. It was reported about 11:20 p.m. Thursday.

The incident is under investigation. Police aren’t sure whether it’s linked to a recent string of crimes involving Molotov cocktails.

The Planned Parenthood fire came on the eve of a 2-day abortion protest at a clinic in Bellevue, which is about 45 miles northeast of Lincoln. [Read more...]

Monday News Roundup

mouse_click_270x270First of all, my apologies for the brevity of content today. I woke up yesterday to a dead laptop. My cat managed to spill a glass of water on top of the computer. And I think the rest of the story is self explanatory. Hopefully the nice geeks at the Genius Bar will give me a new laptop and get me back in business within a day. I think a low-cut shirt should help my cause. Thank goodness for extended warranties and external hard drives.

Here’s your Monday click list. Happy reading!

Dr. Carhart Needs You in Nebraska

Guest writer nicki2377 is a newly active feminist activist from Wichita, KS. After the assassination of Dr. George Tiller, she realized that believing in a woman’s right to choose wasn’t enough – sometimes you have to hold a sign in the pouring rain for the cause. She is currently working hard to make up for lost activist time.

Physicians that are willing to preform abortions in our country are subjected to a laundry list of harassment tactics. The attacks on the doctors and their employees is generally one of intimidation. Dr. LeRoy Carhart discussed the activities that have been directed at his clinic over the years in a recent Newsweek article:

“Carhart knows there are people who want him dead, too. A few days after Tiller’s murder, Carhart’s daughter received a late-night phone call saying her parents too had been killed. His clinic got suspicious letters, one with white powder. It’s been like this since Carhart started performing abortions in the late 1980s. On the same day Nebraska passed a parental-notification law in 1991, his farm burned down, killing 17 horses, a cat, and a dog (the local fire department was unable to determine the fire’s cause). The next day his clinic received a letter justifying the murder of abortion providers. His clinic’s sidewalks have been smeared with manure. Protesters sometimes stalk him in airports. The threats, the violence, now the assassination of his close friend—all of it has left Carhart undaunted, and the billboard-size sign over his parking garage still reads, in foot-high block letters, ABORTION & CONTRACEPTION CLINIC OF NEBRASKA. “They’re at war with us,” says Carhart of the anti–abortion activist who killed Tiller. “We have to realize this isn’t a difference of opinions. We need to fight back.”

Planned Parenthood Closes El Paso Clinic

19872882_240X135Patients in El Paso were greeted with somber news when they arrived at Planned Parenthood today. All 6 of the Planned Parenthood clinics in the city have closed due to financial problems. According to the El Paso Times:

The organization’s interim executive director, Analinda Moreno, announced the shutdown Friday.
“Advising the staff about the closing today was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” she said. “Our patients have always been our first priority, and we are still doing everything we can to provide transfer services. We made this decision with them in mind and in their best interest, and we hope they understand that.”
Moreno, who held back tears at times, said financial pressures necessitated the closing.

“There were many factors that came into the decision,” she said. “We knew eight days ago that there was just absolutely no other way other than to close. Now our concern is negotiating a smooth transfer for all our patients with their consent, but it has been a challenge trying to contact all of them.”

That’s going to be a large task. The clinic served more than 11,000 women, most of them low-income. The Planned Parenthood clinic had served El Paso for 72 years. This is such a disappointment. [Read more...]
