It’s Our Anniversary

Feminists For Choice has been around for a full year. When we launched the site on June 1st of last year, we didn’t know in advance how fortuitous the timing would be. The site had been in the works for a few months. And then Dr. George Tiller was killed on May 31, 2009. Dr. Tiller’s death was certainly a wake up call for many of us. If there is one positive side to his murder, I guess you could say that it motivated many pro-choice supporters to become pro-choice activists.

We’ve had a lot of great posts on the site this year. The top 10 posts in terms of traffic are listed in the middle column. Some of my favorites have been about porn, pro-choice dudes, and clinic escorts. We also hosted choice chats with Gloria Feldt and Carol Adams. We’re hoping to bring you some more in the year to come.

Feminists For Choice has started a new feature called “Feminist Conversations.” We’re talking to pro-choice feminists around the country to find out what rock stars like yourself are doing with your feminist energies. Last week we featured Kamy Shaw, an utterly fabulous midwife from New Mexico who really just kicks major feminist booty. If you’d like to see yourself featured in the column, please send an e-mail to serena@feministsforchoice.com. We’d love to find out what types of activism you’re up to in your neck of the woods.

Well, that’s basically the past year in a nutshell for ya. Many thanks to all of our writers for providing such excellent content for the site. And thanks to all our friends on Twitter for helping us grow. Happy Anniversary, and thanks for reading!

Choice Chat Sum Up

Thank you!A big thank you to everyone who participated in Saturday’s Choice Chat with Carol Adams.  We had about 35 people in the chat room, and let’s just say that the questions people shared were both insightful and exciting.  I think that everyone who came to the chat was willing to examine things from a new point of view, even if they didn’t personally agree with Carol’s thesis that veganism and pro-choice activism are inherently linked.  If you missed the chat, a transcript will be available on the site by the end of this week.  Stay tuned for our next choice chat, which will be in January.

November Choice Chat: The Sexual Politics of Meat

carol adamsJoin Feminists For Choice for our next choice chat. Our guest will be Carol Adams, the author of The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory. Carol’s book has been called “ground-breaking” and “pioneering.” Many say it is an underground classic, which Adams supposes means that lots of people know and love it, but it goes unnoticed by the dominant media. Ms. Adams will be discussing the connections between veganism and the pro-choice movement. She’ll also be sharing tips for vegans to help them survive the holiday season.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 21st at 12:00 PM PST. This choice chat promises to be enlightening for those who may have never considered the connection between what they eat and what they believe. If you’ve read Ms. Adams’s books, you know you’re in for a big treat.

PETA’s Response to Feminist Criticism Misses the Mark

hollypetaOne of our readers sent a letter to PETA voicing his concern about their sexist ad campaigns, and he got a pretty surprising response from PETA. David was kind enough to send this in.

Dear PETA,

PLEASE STOP all the sexist ads that degrade and demean women. Women are displayed 3/4 naked or more, ads with vile and suggestive catch phrases, again that include mostly nude women. The most recent ad refers to women as “beached whales. PETA is supposedly a progressive organization; so why then do so many of its billboards-ads and media campaigns depict women in sexist-degrading and offensive ways? you will get NO $$ from me until the sexism stops

Here’s PETA’s response to David. [Read more...]
