hate crime adThe Task Force recently reported that the Senate may be voting on Hate Crime Legislation as soon as this Thursday as an amendment to the Department of Defense appropriations bill. That means we are literally steps away from pushing through an initiative that would seek to decrease violence among the LGBTQ community. The statistics surrounding violence committed against those to be, or perceived to be, members of such community are alarming.

It’s time that we start thinking about the thousands of people in our country who are subject to violence, both physical and psychological, and who need our government to have enough compassion to protect them. I urge you to get involved by contacting your senator! Remember, the personal is political, and we all have a responsibility to look out for the well being of others. Thousands of sexual minorities in this country live their lives out of fear. No one should be subject to that kind of dehumanization, and I hope that the Senate, the House, and the President all do the right thing.
