I’m a big fan of Good Asian Drivers. In case you’re unfamiliar with them, Good Asian Drivers broke into the national spotlight in 2008 when slam poet Kit Yan and songwriter Melissa Li launched an unforgettable cross-country tour, playing in over 30 states in 12 weeks. Melissa Li’s music, a catchy blend of folk-rock and pop, has been heralded for its honest lyrics and bold sound. Kit Yan’s spoken word tackles race and gender with candor, eloquence, and humor. Their latest album “Drive Away Home” adds drummer Ashley Baier to the mix. Baier has garnered a reputation as both a skillful drummer and percussionist in high demand in the music scene of New York City.

“Drive Away Home” features a mix of music and slam poetry with heavy feminist overtones that fans have come to expect. The video and lyrics for “Here’s to You” are basically a love song to women.

“For Our Daughters” is dedicated to younger girls, offering them encouragement to fulfill their dreams – it’s basically a GAD’s version of Naz’s “I Know I Can,” so take that however you want. Baier’s driving rhythms on “Third Gender” and “Queer Nation” make you wake up and pay attention to Kit’s lyrics about the complexities of gender identity. It’s not all serious – “On the Road With You” features Kit and Melissa poking fun at each other in a way that only people who really love being together can.

For an oldie but goody, check out GAD’s Youtube channel for more videos, including my absolute favorite . . . their spoof of Taylor Swift’s “Teardrops on My Guitar.”

For their spoof of “I Kissed a Girl,” click on the “Most Viewed” tab on their Youtube page. You should also check out their version of “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The dancing is sure to make you laugh.
