Federal Taxes and GOP Hypocrisy
So this isn’t really the high road as far as opinions go, but here it is: the GOP is really pissing me off! Thankfully, I take blood pressure meds, so I haven’t had a stroke or anything. But they really, really, really make me mad! Of course, they have for a while. Lately, though, there has been a huge spike on the Mrs. Pissed o’ Meter.
It really started with the Stupak amendment. I won’t belabor the point, you all know what I’m talking about. Days of reading and listening to commentary on the subject haven’t helped. Especially hearing anti-choice congress people whine about forcing the taxpayers to pay for something the majority of us don’t agree with.
Well, assbag, here’s the problem with that: My tax dollars go to all sorts of things I don’t agree with. Its kind of part of paying taxes. I don’t know about you, but I have NEVER met anyone who pays taxes and doesn’t know of something they wish their money weren’t going towards. Period. Its part of living in a democracy.
Paying taxes for things I don’t agree with has been a problem for me for such a long time that I have even developed a therapeutic (if somewhat delusional) way to deal with it: I tell myself that MY tax dollars go only towards my husband’s salary. Other people’s tax dollars go towards things like subsidies for factory farms that mistreat animals, Predator Drones that kill Pakistani women and children, the cameras that patrol the border, prisons (and lawyers and court costs) for pot smokers, sex offender registries, George W. Bush’s salary (and now life-time protection by the secret service), laundering Dick Cheney’s underwear…and the list goes ON AND ON AND ON!
And, being that my husband is a U.S. Marine, I am pretty sure that even some of my readers would put his salary on the list of things they don’t like to pay for. The point is, we all have a list. And we can work day and night, blog, protest, etc. and we can try as much as we want to make that list as short as possible. But, at the end of the day, we are never, ever all going to agree on what that list should be and we all have to suck it up and pay Uncle Sam anyway. Its called providing for the common good. And having things like roads and public transit and schools.
On top of this, the P.O.M. flashes fast and red when the same assbag who is crying foul over making the taxpayers shell out cash for a procedure they don’t agree with votes against the Public Option the MAJORITY of taxpayers say they want. What he’s really saying is that his conscience dictates that he obey the will of his constituents when he agrees with them, but its OK for him to ignore it when he doesn’t.
This, my friends, is when another of my therapeutic mechanisms kicks in: I call her The Hypocrite Fairy. She first appeared to me in a vision I had at the beginning of the Iraq war. Colon Powell–who has done a lot to redeem himself in my eyes since, but at the time really deserved a visit from the HF–was on T.V. talking about how “the Palestinians really need to learn to solve their problems peacefully,” as we were invading Iraq. She appeared, zapping him right in the top of his melon, the lightning bolt of HF justice vaporizing him on the spot. Just as She did then, the Hypocrite Fairy has had a field day zapping congresspeople lately. Particularly the GOP ones.
Since my anger level has necessitated that I ground myself from mainstream (television, in particular) news, I have taken refuge in my old friend Jon Stewart. He can be such a comfort at times like this. Last night’s The Daily Show was particularly yummy (the entire episode is fantastic, you should watch it if you missed it and watch it again if you didn’t). As my thanks for your kind absorption of my latest rant, I will leave you with a clip–its pretty much a summary of what I’ve said here and what I’ve been feeling all week. Only its The Daily Show, so its funnier. Enjoy.

Thanks
I think things have gotten so ridiculous, laughing might be the only way to deal with it. At least until it is closer to election time again.

It’s no laughing matter when Fascists have their way, and it’s getting easy to see which ones are and which ones aren’t! The fascists only want to destroy freedom and choice is a freedom. They continue to play the game of denying others in the name of morality, whose morality? Not the morality of equality, that’s not their way. It’s either their way or no way at all, suppression of rights is their game.
