Reyna Velarde
Reyna is a teacher, an activist and a comedian. Velarde completed her Masters Degree in May of 2009 in Communications at California State University, Long Beach. Reyna studied the portrayal of the Iraq War in the media, performance of gender, and mythology. Reyna believes we should continue to blur the lines of gender and realize that we can fall in love or like with anyone, despite their sex or gender.
What is Feminism? Feminism is a movement to enact change in two major ways. First, the treatment and views of womyn and men should be viewed equally. Second, that people challenge the performance/portrayal of femininity and masculinity in the media and our every day lives. To me, feminism means having real choice. I support womyn who want to stay home only if they make a real choice, rather than do so in order to fulfill someone else’s expectations.
What is Choice? Choice is a responsibility. Life is about choices, like the choice to undergo a medical procedure. We have a responsibility to protect the lives of all womyn with choice. Without choice, womyn die from unorthodox procedures in allies with wire hangers.
