Fannie Fierce

askfannie-bioFannie Fierce is a self-professed queer mother hen who first earned her wings in the feminist movement. An advocate for queer and gender rights on the local, national, and international stage, Fannie has worked with organizations in Washington, D.C., Montreal, QC, and Richmond, VA. Fannie wrote the column AskFannie for BelowtheBelt.org, a gender/identity blog, which was picked up by The Bilerico Project. She is thrilled to be back in the world of advice and amongst the feminist flock . . . (birds of a feather and all). Fannie resides in New York City with her kitten Sedgwick, named after the illustrious and recently passed Eve Sedgewick, whose writing inspired Fannie into feminism in the first place.

What is Feminism?
Feminism is a struggle. It is not about making women act like men. It is not a female superiority ideology. It is not an anti-man movement. Feminism is a liberated way to view the world. Feminism is not by and for women. Feminism is for everyone. Ordinary people whose eyes have been open to the elaborate political, economical, sociological, and institutional hegemony which operates in increasingly sinister and elaborate ways. We are freedom fighters armed only with questions and a burning sense of justice. Feminism is about unlocking unheard voices, digging up a millenia of an oppressed secret history of women and men who have dared to see the world as equals. Feminism is freedom.

What is Choice?
Choice is the right to decide what is done to your body and for what reason. It encompasses women’s rights to the control of their reproductive organs, but it extends far beyond that. It encompasses a intersexed child having the right to choose what, when, and if invasive surgeries are performed on his or her body. It is the right of a male children to choose whether or not the removal of their foreskins is congruent with their lives. It is the right of transgender men and women to have access to medical services which enable them to transition to the gender of their choosing. Choice is about your control over your body.
