The pro-choice and anti-choice worlds alike have been buzzing with the news of this past week’s FBI/DEA raid of the Women’s Medical Society, a clinic here in Philadelphia that was providing abortions as well as other services in a disgustingly unsanitary and dangerous environment. I commented on this via a letter to the editor in [...]

Womb is Utah’s

As I start to write this article I have the uncontrollable urge to ask Utah: are you kidding me?
I was alerted yesterday by Amplify that Utah’s congress overwhelmingly passed legislation that will criminalize women for miscarriages if it is determined the pregnancy ended as a result of “intentional, knowing, or reckless behavior.”
The bill is riddled [...]

Next to the adorable face of a black child, giant bold letters proclaim, “BLACK CHILDREN ARE AN ENDANGERED SPECIES.” The ads (there are a few different ones, but they are all along the same lines) direct the viewer to visit www.toomanyaborted.com to learn about what they see as the root of the problem–Black women in [...]

I’m not really sure what to make of Angie Jackson, a 27-year-old mother who’s live-Tweeting her medical abortion.
In an interview with blogger Jessica Wakeman at The Frisky, Angie discusses her reasons for sharing her abortion in such a public way:
“[W] what I was trying to say to people who find themselves in this position is [...]

Last Friday I had the opportunity to volunteer at the annual Roe v. Wade luncheon that was hosted by Planned Parenthood of Arizona. Over 450 people attended the event, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. It was really energizing to be in a ballroom that was packed with so many pro-choice supporters!
The event’s keynote speakers [...]

Save Susan!

Each Women’s History Month the portrait of Susan B. Anthony decorates classroom walls around the country. What many people this year will not realize is that a heated debate is taking place involving the life of the 19th Century suffrage leader, and of all things, whether or not she opposed abortion.
Several conservative organizations, calling themselves [...]

Media outlets are once again frightening women into reproducing sooner rather than later. The headline “Women Lose 90% of Their Eggs by Age 30,” is being seen across the globe. It does sound a bit scary until you really do the math.

At puberty girls are estimated to have approximately 300,000-400,000 eggs left.
At 30 years old [...]

Why I won’t be watching the Olympics this year

I usually love watching the Olympics. There is so much to love, the passion of the athletes, the elaborate ceremonies and the competition that paradoxically unites most of the world. The Olympics can so often bring out the best in people; after Nodar Kumaritashvili’s tragedy today it was beautiful to see the way [...]

Gandhi’s birth control of choice

I recently read an article about the correspondence and meeting between two of the most independent thinkers of the 20th Century, Margaret Sanger and Mahatma Gandhi. The two activists met in 1936 when Sanger traveled to India to speak with Gandhi about birth control. By that time Sanger was advocating internationally for artificial contraceptives and [...]
